Sak Narwal Rises to the Challenge of Catching Redfish

The redfish is one of the fisherman's favorite challenge and Sak Narwal likes a challenge. Considered a warm water fish, the redfish has similar structure to the stingray and catfish. The copper color gives them the reddish hue.

The redfish is generally found along the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic coast where avid fishermen pit their skills with this agile fish. Once an endangered species due to over fishing, redfish live a long life (40-50 years) and grow large up to 36 inches and ninety pounds. The Louisiana coast is a favorite fishing ground for fishermen like Sak Narwal, a catch and release fisherman who enjoys the challenge and the solitude of fishing.

Redfish can be lured with cut bait of mullet or mantis shrimp. The redfish has a keen sense of smell and can be lured towards the hook which can be reigned in by the angler. It is a voracious eater and bottom feeder. Some fishermen like to troll in a flat bottom boat. This can be a challenge since the redfish has a keen sense of hearing and can detect the boat from afar. Many anglers prefer to wade into the marshy water to keep as quite and unobtrusive an approach as possible. Of course, he is also competing with diving birds like gulls and terns who enjoy fishing for redfish as well.

Redfish is abundant in Louisiana, Texas and Florida as well as the Carolina coasts. Sak Narwal, who likes to learn from nature, has pitted his skills with this mighty fish in the Louisiana marshes.

Online Florists Make Gift Giving a Breeze

Buying gift flowers has never been easier. Thanks to nursery growers and the transport industry, fresh flowers can be flown anywhere in the world. Online flower shops like 1-800 Flowers specialize in making gift giving very convenient.

  • Local florists also have their stores online so that customers can order via internet or telephone and flowers are delivered by employees in the florists' vehicle.

Gadgets for Eyeglasses

Remember Geordi La Forge' eyeglasses on Star Trek: Next Generation? Blind since birth, Geordi is able to see through his VISOR (Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ replacement.) Modern technology is not quite there yet but more digital enhancements may soon be available in an eye wear store near you.

Hearing aids have long been embedded on eyeglass temples. TriSpecs has come out with sunglasses having MP3, Bluetooth technology and headphones on the eye wear temples. Vuzix boasts of its iWearAV920 model of video eyeglasses which connects an iPod through a USB drive right in the glass temple allowing for movie or video viewing on the eyeglasses. Sony has also come out with its own version of this video eye wear. Another futuristic innovation is NEC's invention of the translator eye wear. The gadget called the Tele Scouter is a pair of eyeglasses without the lenses. Software translates the spoken word picked up by headphones on the eyeglasses and projects the translation right into the wearer's retina much like a movie subtitle.

Scientists continue to work on technology to aid the visually impaired. Soon Star Trek's Geordi LaForge VISOR may be around the corner. It can happen. It will happen.

Gift Baskets for Holiday Gift Giving

For a few years now, I have been sending out of town friends gift baskets for holiday and special occasion gift giving. With so many products to choose from and so many vendors available online, I have been able to tailor the gift to friend's likes.

For my gourmet friends, I can send a gift basket of wine, cheese, nuts, with a cookbook or a special utensil. To my bibliophile friends, I can send a basket of books by their favorite authors. To my plant loving friends, I usually send 1800flowers gift baskets. My movie viewing friends enjoy popcorn gift baskets with a DVD, varieties of popping corn and a movie pass.

I have also made up unique gift baskets from specialty store finds all year round. I pick potential gifts I know certain friend might like that I can later put in a gift bag. Jazz lovers might like vintage Blue Note music or CD. I might pick up a Fiesta plate for or a Hummel figurine for friends who collect them. I especially enjoy thrift store finds of rare items that someone might like.

For the upcoming holiday season beat the crowd. Make your own gift baskets or order from your favorite online store.

Poinsettias: Most Popular of the Christmas Flowers

Flowers for the winter and Christmas season are now showing in stores and poinsettias are leading the pack. It is the best selling flowering potted plant though most of the sales occur in a 6 week period. With over 100 varieties of the plant and different colors to choose from, poinsettias remain vibrant for several weeks or months.

Poinsettias are native to Mexico where ancient Aztecs called it Cuetlaxochitl and used its sap to make red dye. It derives its name from Joel Poinsett who introduced the plant to the United States in 1825. Today, poinsettias are grown in all 50 states, California growing and exporting the largest number.

The colorful leaves are bracts or modified leaves while the flowers are the small, usually yellow accent in the center of the bract. The plants are priced according to the number and density of the bracts. Choose plants that have sturdy green leaves down to the soil and have fully colored bracts. The flowers in the middle should be firm with no powdery pollen falling out. This is a sign of aging and the plant will soon loose its color. Choose plants that are balanced all around and look full from all sides. When you take it home in cold weather, be sure to wrap it as it is sensitive to drops in temperature. Allow indirect light for about 6 hours a day and water only when dry allowing good drainage to avoid root rot.

You can purchase poinsettias just about anywhere,at nurseries, flower shops, grocery stores and online florists. Checkout sale coupons at 1800Flowers coupon for a wide selection of poinsettias in beautiful containers. Poinsettias make colorful inexpensive Christmas decorations and holiday gifts.

Fall Decorations with Flowers and Leaves

Autumn is such a colorful season and decorating the house can be easy and inexpensive. Colorful flowers of yellow and orange with a variety of brown, yellow and red foliage arranged in just about any kind of vase make nice centerpieces. I enjoy looking at how creative my neighbors decorate their homes and porches for the fall season.

  • Yellow, brown and orange mums often go on sale in the fall. Placed in a basket, a ceramic pot or autumn colored gift baskets, mums are just a natural. Clustered with pumpkins on the porch, two or three pots of mums make for an inviting welcome.
  • Fall leaves of various colors, sizes and shapes on a table runner with small pumpkins and a centerpiece of fall flowers and candles make for a festive table.
  • Various door wreaths of fall leaves, flowers, gourds, and berries adorn my neighbors' doors.
  • And of course, there are the carved pumpkins and black and orange decorations for Halloween.
I don't have to come up with original ideas. I can just copy my neighbors' creations as they outdo themselves year after year.

Steve Stevanovich Gives Back to the University of Chicago

Asset manager, Steve Stevanovich, who has made a name for himself in the financial world, has now embarked on giving back to his alma mater, the University of Chicago. He has not only given a 7 million dollar endowment to establish the Steve Stevanovich Center for Financial Mathematics but he also lends a mentoring hand to students and financial managers.

Launched in 2006, the Steve Stevanovich Center for Financial Mathematics was formed to bring together mathematical theory and research with real world financial experience and academicians with financial experts. Medallion Taxicab Technology Passenger Enhancement Projects and Amos Tamam

Amos Tamam has worked tirelessly to bring enhancements to the taxicab industry and this has paid off not only for Amos Tamam who owns Taxitronics but for taxi drivers and taxicab owners in New York City, Philadelphia and possibly major cities worldwide.

In March 2004, the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission mandated that medallion taxicabs implement certain technology enhancements. These enhancements focus on the following:
  • automated collection and submission of trip data
  • installation of a passenger information monitor including a passenger information map in the taxi
  • electronic transmission capability in the taxicab
  • equipment to enable credit and debit card payment
Amos Tamam founded Taxitronics, a company dedicated to the technology that has made it possible for medallion taxicab drivers to comply with the New York City Taxicab Technology Passenger Enhancement Project (T-PEP.) What this means to all concerned is increased safety for taxi drivers and passengers who need not carry large sums of cash, more comfort for the passenger who can follow the route and access online entertainment, electronic communication and GPS monitoring between the cab driver and the fleet manager, and automated collection and submission of data required by law.

With the success of this project, watch for it in taxicabs in your city.

Many busy entrepreneurs and businessmen play as hard as they work with such leisure activities as yatching, party going, or flying. Not Sakwinder Narwal. Sakwinder "Sak" prefers the quiet joy of fishing. And fishing he does with a passion.

Don't Forget the Sun Glasses

Summertime is outdoors time. Whether you are sun tanning in the back porch, going to the beach, hiking or just taking a walk, don't forget the sun glasses. The eyes are just as vulnerable to the effects of the sun's rays as the skin.

Sun radiation comes in the form of ultraviolet rays and high energy visible rays. The ozone layer filters most of these radiations but enough do escape into the earth to cause damage to the skin and eyes.

There are three types of ultraviolet rays (UV) all of which have the potential to cause skin and eye damage.
  • Ultraviolet A is a low energy radiation which can penetrate the cornea and reach the retina. Long term UVA exposure can cause cataracts and sometimes, macular degeneration, a disorder of the retina.
  • Ultraviolet B (UVB) has a longer wave length. Although filtered by the ozone layer, enough radiation reach the earth to cause eye damage. UVB can burn the cornea, a condition known as photokeratitis. Snow blindness is an example of photokeratitis and is a risk especially in high altitude.
  • Ultraviolet C (UVC) has the longest wave length and the greatest potential to cause UV damage. Fortunately, the ozone layer blocks this effectively and little escapes into the earth surface.
High energy visible radiation (HEV) or blue light is another type of sun radiation. It has the potential to damage the retina on prolonged exposure.

The eyes can be protected from harmful solar exposure by:
  • wearing a wide brimmed hat.
  • wearing sun glasses that block UV and HEV rays 100 percent
  • limiting sun exposure
Remember, children and infants have delicate eyes and should have sun protection. They, too, need sun glasses that block sun rays 100 percent.

Enjoy the outdoors but don't forget the sun glasses.

Thank You, Jill and Kevin for Lighting Up Our Lives

I admit. I am one of those 6.5 million YouTube page viewers who watched Jill Peterson and Kevin Heinz wedding video. I watched it not once, not twice but over and over. I watched it on YouTube, The Today Show, and the evening news. I watched the wedding party dance on the Saturday Today Show. And I'll probably watch it again. I can't help it. The joy is contagious.

On June 20, 2009, Jill Peterson and Kevin Heinz went up the wedding aisle, not to the tune of Here Comes the Bride or Cannon in D but to the music of Forever by Chris Brown. But march they did not. Instead, the wedding party danced and boogied and somersaulted up to the altar, ushers, groomsmen, bridesmaids and of course, groom and bride. What a delight to watch, this couple who dared to be different and shared their joy with their guests and inadvertently the world wide web. I smiled, I laughed and I rocked.

It was so timely in a period of angst over the economy, lost jobs, wars and the passing of beloved icons. For a brief moment, the Heinz' allowed us to smile, laugh and feel the love of life and of each other that this couple shared. If this is a foreshadowing of their life together, it will be one of great fun and adventure. And thank you, Jill and Kevin, for allowing us this glimpse of fun and hope.

If you haven't seen it, watch it here. Watch it again and smile and dance.

Mohammed Babangida Blogs on Jazz

As if he dose not have enough to do with his busy schedule as oil and gas consultant, businessman and polo player, Nigerian mogul, Mohammed Babangida, also blogs on jazz music.

In his blog, Mohammed Babangida traces the roots of jazz to its African origin and follows its progression to modern jazz.  He is especially partial to blues music which evolved as an expression of the early African American condition in the south.  He is a fan of Charlie Mingus and Louis Armstrong.

As the world gets smaller and smaller, the blend of African and American music is finding its way into contemporary music.  Paul Simon's Graceland album released in 1986 was inspired by the mbaqanga sounds of the South African group, Boyoyo Boys. Paul Simon used various African jazz musicians in his album.  African jazz musicians are becoming more influential in contemporary American jazz.  By lending his stature to his blogs, Mohammed Babangida is certainly contributing to the evolution of a genre of African American jazz truly derived from both continents.

The son of former Nigerian President Ibrahim Babangida, Mohammed Babangida was educated in Europe and Harvard Business School specializing in the oil and gas industry.  He is also an accomplished polo player.

Linus Gitahi: Biggest Booster for Kenyan Runners

There is no doubt that Linus Gitahi is the biggest admirer and booster of Kenyan runners.  He writes a blog to inform track and field fans and fans of Kenyan runners about these athletes. That is, when he is not busy with his duties as CEO of Nation Media Group, the largest media firm in Central and Eastern Africa. Now, about Kenyan runners.

Kenyan runners burst into the track and field world by winning Olympic medals in 1964 and they have led the pack since.  Some say it is the Kenyan diet, or maybe it is living in high altitude, or that given the distance between villages and lack of motorized transportation, Kenyans are naturally trained to be runners.  But many observers of Kenyan distance runners, Linus Gitahi included, opine that running is in the Kenyan's nature.  Kenyan journalist John H. Manner writes that Kenyans are born to run, having evolved in a Darwinian way to be the world's greatest runners. Linus Gitahi also writes about the Kalenjin runners.  The best Kenyan running athletes seem to come from one tribe, the Kalenjin tribe.  Berkley anthropologist Vincent Sarich writes that Kalenjin runners can outrun 90 percent of the human race and that the average Kalenjin woman, given similar training can outrun the world's average man any day.

Amazing, isn't it?

Survey Resource Center: A Way to Generate Sales

Sales generation often involves good old sweat and hard work.  It is important to find qualified buyers ready to buy your particular niche product.  Finding buyers for your product may involve cold calls to leads in the telephone book, putting an ad in your local newspaper and of course, asking your clients for referrals of friends and business acquaintances needing your product.  Don't forget networking with your local chamber of commerce.

The world wide web, of course, opens further opportunities.  Create a website or a blog for your product and actively promote it.  Be an advertiser and use affiliate marketing.  You can purchase pre-qualified leads from lead generating  companies such as Survey Resource Center   (SRC Leads.) And of course, nothing tops good customer service and selling a good product to keep satisfied  repeat customers.

Amos Tamam Brings Safety and Profits to Cab Drivers

Thanks to Amos Tamam, cab drivers in New York City and Philadelphia may be safer and more profitable. How did he do it? With intimate knowledge of the taxi industry and a dedication to improving the working conditions of taxi drivers.

Amos Tamam, an electrical engineer, has provided wireless credit card processing to taxi drivers. Taxi drivers, no longer needing to carry large sums of paper money, are less vulnerable to robbery. This, coupled with GPS technology, bring added safety to an industry that has lost many cab drivers. This is also a boon to cab riders who do not carry much cash. It is a win win situation for both driver and passenger.

Amos Tamam is the CEO of Verifone Transportation Systems, the company that brought this credit card technology into taxicabs. This is the culmination of thirty years of working in the taxicab industry bringing solutions to problems plaguing taxicab fleets. He worked in taxicab repairs and developed technologies to find better taxi meters and ways to improve fleet and fuel management. Aware of the occupational hazard of robbery and assault to cab drivers, Amos Tamam brought the vision of credit card in taxis into reality. Taxis can also have touch screen monitors to provide weather, local news and entertainment information. He hopes to bring this technology to taxicab fleets all over the country.

Choosing Online Florists

With the second Sunday of May fast approaching, many turn to online florists to deliver Mothers day flowers.  How do you choose an online florist and get the best deal?

An online florist may be a brick and mortar flower shop with its own website and a business relationship with other florists in the customer's locality. Floral arrangements are made and delivered by the local flower shop. This makes same day delivery and redelivery (when the recipient is not available) possible. It is best to do business with online florists who have been in business for many years such as 1-800-flowers or FTD. These companies generally have a large selection of gift ideas like confectioner baskets and beautiful potted plants. Choose one with good support both online and by phone in real time. Needless to say, these online shops have secure check-out systems. Often, these companies have really good discount promotions such as 1800flowers coupon for Mothers Day.

Another type of online florist is the direct shipper which may be a flower broker, grower, or flower warehouse. These online flower shops can be a good source of cheap flowers. They offer a variety of cut flowers, carefully boxed and shipped overnight. They offer many choices at a good price for the person who does not mind making her own flower arrangement.

Managing Your Online Reputation

Whether you are one person looking to get hired, a newsworthy individual or a multimillion dollar business, a negative online reputation can hurt where it matters most. Since search engines have become the prime means of finding out about anything and anyone, managing your online reputation is very important.

It can occur inadvertently as in being associated with a negative article about someone else. Sometimes a negative comment in a forum can find its way to the search engines. Or it could be vicious as in being the subject of a web page created solely for your online destruction. Negative information can dominate search engine results about you.

It is important to learn techniques for online reputation management. First, search your name and know what is being said about you. Try talking to whoever entered negative information and rationally ask them to correct the information or take down the page. You can counter negative information by flooding the search engines with positive articles about you or your company. You can also hire reputation management companies to monitor and repair a negative reputation.
